Audi Ring, first free-standing temporary building for Frankfurt motor show

Audi ring, Frankfurt Motor Show 2011,

Schmidhuber + partner have proved that “necessity is the mother of invention,” by designing the “Audi Ring,” a new double-story twisting 400-meter test drive track that encircles the showroom. Designed for Audi for the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt motor show, which will run from15th to 25th of September, the Audi Ring is the first free-standing temporary building and is also an entirely separate building in terms of its design and structure.

The test drive track is designed in a manner that it surrounds all the Audi vehicles in a very interactive way to make the technology and the design process, together with the grand hall showroom, visible to all the visitors. The Audi Ring has exterior cutaways along its structure sides and top, which allow nine vehicles to travel at once. Moreover, visitors can enjoy test drives of the current as well as the future Audi vehicles, under the supervision of professional drivers for a safer ride.

Although the Frankfurt motor show will end by 25th of September, the Audi Ring will still remain till 20th of October, this means people who miss the motor show, can still see the new design and enjoy the test drives of latest Audi vehicles. Here is how Audi describes the design concept:

The test track pervades the building like a pulsating artery, forming the core of the architectural ensemble around which the whole building is shaped; all entrances, openings, and facade contours are geared towards this dynamic vehicle presentation. Movement, not only of the vehicles, can be felt in every corner of the building. […] the sophisticated choreography of the test track defines the overall spatial and brand experience, [forming] the emotional climax and end of the tour.
