IBA Dock, a sustainable construction set on a floating pontoon

Clean and green architectural marvels are cropping up like never before. Adding to the list is another staggering creation, the IBA information center of the IBA_Hamburg site situated on the Elbe islands. The information center is a floating an attention grabbing structure erected on a floating pontoon. Christened the IBA_Dock, it comes tagged with a variety of technologies in terms of renewable energy.

Based on the IMMOSOLAR concept of zero balance, the construction comprising of modular superstructures has been placed nicely on a pontoon crafted out of steel. The pontoon measures 13,454 square feet or 1250 meter square on which the IBA_Dock sits. The concept of zero balance concentrates on the management of solar energy and other things that makes sure the building gets cooling and heat throughout the year in a sustainable way. The presence of heating and cooling ceilings comes as a relief where it heats the place in winters and removes heat from the same space during summers.

Sixteen solar thermal collectors are fixed on the rooftop at an angle of 50 degrees, which face towards the south. Such a placement makes sure that the water gets heated when the temperature dips during the winter season. The heating and cooling requirement of the building are taken care by electric heat pumps that get fed by solar energy. The pontoon has been fitted with a heat transformer, which the pump uses to further extract its environmental heat from surrounding water. IBA_Dock makes very good use of solar energy, while saving the excess for later use.
