Vissershok Container Classroom gives green lessons to students

There are many parts around the world that are poverty struck because of which children don’t even receive basic education. The lack of resources and money makes it rather difficult to built a proper school, leaving people will no means when it comes to learning or going to school. But, a school necessarily does not have to be all concrete and window panes. At least that’s what it seems when one learns about the Vissershok Container Classroom.

The classroom is a brainchild of Tsai Design Studio and is situated on the outskirts of Cape Town, in the rolling hills of Durbanville wine valley. It has been sponsored by AfriSam, Woolworths and Safmarine, which are three South African companies. The design makes good use of a recycled container that has been swapped into a primary school for rural children. It has been specially designed for children of farm workers and other poor people who live in Du Noon, which is an area below the poverty line.

The container used to make the independent classroom measures 12 meters and comes tagged with eco friendliness. It exploits the available space to the maximum and that too without demanding a heavy investment. The design was conceived keeping into mind various factors, which includes environment factors as well as site conditions. The brilliant design comprises of four important elements: Learning area, Gathering area, Play area and Growing area. These four elements sole various purposes and ensure the complete development of a child.

The interesting design of the learning area serves as a classroom in the morning and doubles as a library in the afternoon, which can be used to issue books and read by all the primary school children. It comprises of a large roof that act as a shield against harsh sun rays, which may prove to be a hindrance while studying. Both the sides of the container have vibrant windows that support cross ventilation and keep the space away from a suffocating feel. The gathering area features stepped seating that extends till the patio. It unfurls enough space, which can be used as a platform for socializing as well as an amphitheater.

Vissershok Container Classroom has a play area as well that will let students relax. It is made using outstretched arms, which stretch outwards and are actually steel frames holding the play equipment. The clean and green also comprises of a green wall that will support vegetation and will serve to be a vertical garden for growing vegetables. This will also act as a shelter for the play area and also serve as an education tool for students. Besides this, the fresh produce can be used to feed underprivileged students making sure they get proper nutrition. Vissershok Container Classroom will prove to be a great school as it provides all the facilities without utilizing a lot of resources as well as money.
